Tulle skirts are just for little girls? Not at all! We’re thrilled to wear them this season. And it’s not just for the princess vibes—they can also look quite elegant. Our editor visited the Iberian Peninsula and spotted the skirt on the hips of many Spanish women.
What we used to wear as girls is back! And not just on the playgrounds and elementary schools of the city, but on the streets. In the Valencian city of Alicante, I encountered numerous women gliding through narrow alleys in tulle skirts. Time to follow their lead!
Overview
The History of the Tulle Skirt: From Ballet to Drag
Who would have thought: The elegant fabric tulle has its origins in a French town. It comes from Tulle (pronounced: Tüll) in central France. A classical ballet dancer first brought it to the stage in 1832. The history of this garment dates back to the 19th century!

After a revamp of the ballet skirt by Christian Dior’s opulent “New Look” collection in 1947, it quickly became a symbol of extravagance. Designer Vivienne Westwood also knew this and added a touch of punk to the tulle skirt. Nowadays, the garment is popular among drag queens, at weddings, and in street style. A versatile piece of clothing!
We Love Style Clash
But how do you best combine the tulle skirt? It’s not easy to incorporate such an opulent piece. The fine mesh fabric practically screams “princess,” which is why many choose to integrate it in an edgy style. That means: oversized T-shirt, leather jacket, and boots. A loose blouse also pairs well with the skirt. The layered look is especially practical in spring or on cooler summer days!
More is More
Why not pair the tulle skirt with an equally puffy top? Either find a top or blouse made from the same fabric and in a similar style, or choose something that reflects the color and texture. Here, we go by the motto: More is more!

You also have the option to create a monochromatic outfit. Here, you stay within one color family but incorporate different textures to keep the look interesting. Blue, pink, yellow–a soft tone for a gentle yet stylish look!

Why is the Tulle Skirt Making a Comeback?
Although the trend has leaned towards solid fabrics that appear minimalist in recent years, there is a counter-movement. Flowing fabrics like chiffon, tulle, or organza with ruffles appear feminine and maximalist. They evoke opulent Rococo paintings and voluminous flamenco outfits.
