Buy, try on at home at your leisure, and easily return if unsatisfied—this is how many customers handle their shopping at H&M. Typically, customers had 30 days to complete this process after purchase. However, the Swedish clothing chain is now significantly tightening the return period. STYLEBOOK has the details.
Whether in-store or online, many customers take advantage of the typically generous 30-day return period when shopping. Some brands have even offered up to 100 days in the past. At H&M, you currently have 30 days to return items. This is set to change in a few days.
H&M Shortens Return Period
“If you are not satisfied with your order, you can return items within 30 days of receipt. The items must be in good condition and the tags must not be removed,” states the H&M website regarding return conditions. However, if you look closely, a new notice has recently appeared. “Please note: From June 19, 2025, sale items can be returned within 14 days of receiving the order.”
Thus, H&M is significantly shortening the return period from 30 to 14 days, at least for discounted items. Customers who like to try on clothes at home or have difficulty making decisions now have less time to do so if it involves sale items.
H&M’s Statement on the New Return Periods
STYLEBOOK asked H&M why the company decided on this step, and in a statement, it said: “To ensure as many customers as possible can benefit from our attractive sale offers, we have shortened the return period for discounted items to 14 days from receipt (online purchase) or from the purchase date (store purchase).”
A move that ultimately benefits other customers. And further: “This way, returned items can quickly go back on sale–and bring joy to others.”

Increase in Return Fees
Just this February, there was an adjustment for online returns at H&M. A fee for non-member customers for online returns was introduced three years ago. These fees have been gradually adjusted and are now extended to everyone.
An H&M spokesperson told STYLEBOOK at the time: “Like others in the industry, we introduced a fee for online returns in Germany for non-member/basic member customers some time ago. This has helped reduce returns, so we have now extended this to all customers.” Specifically, this means that now not only non-members and basic members have to pay a return fee, but all H&M customers who order online. In this context, the fee has been increased from the initial 1.99 euros to 2.99 euros. Online customers can avoid this by returning items to a store of the Swedish clothing retailer. This remains free of charge.
