Queen Mary of Denmark is known for her classic style and typically leaves nothing to chance when it comes to fashion. At the Global Fashion Summit, the queen appeared in a casual pantsuit that featured a surprising detail, which did not sit well with everyone.
The “Global Fashion Summit” is one of the world’s leading conferences on sustainability in the fashion industry. From June 3 to 5, the event will take place in Copenhagen under this year’s theme “Barriers and Bridges.” Queen Mary has been the patron of the “Global Fashion Agenda,” which organizes the “Global Fashion Summit,” since 2009.

As the patron, Queen Mary naturally attended the event, visiting the opening session and subsequently the Innovation Forum. For this fashionable occasion, she chose a gray pantsuit from the MKDT Studio’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. The twist: instead of long pants, she surprised with Bermuda shorts, making a bold statement. She paired the blazer with a wide belt from Zimmermann, giving herself a tailored silhouette. As accessories, she chose classic suede pumps from Gianvito Rossi and gold jewelry from Dulong and Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen.

Queen Mary’s Look Sparks Discussions
Given the summer temperatures and the occasion, it was indeed a successful outfit. However, as always, fashion is a matter of taste, and some Instagram users cannot and do not want to warm up to the look. The short Bermuda-style pants, in particular, divided opinions in the comments under a post by the Danish royal family. One user commented: “These pants are a flop.” Surprisingly many agreed: “I actually agree with you! It’s rare to criticize the queen’s clothing, but I don’t find this particularly pretty or elegant,” it said.
Others, however, find Queen Mary’s outfit quite successful, as Bermuda shorts and culottes are not only very trendy but also give the classic look a modern touch. One user noted that Queen Mary had worn this outfit before, but paired it with boots at the time. Others kept it brief and wrote enthusiastically: “Looks great, as always. A true queen.”
Where Do Bermuda Shorts Come From?
The Bermuda shorts originated, as the name suggests, on the Bermuda Islands, a British overseas territory in the Atlantic. Their history is closely linked to the climate, British colonial administration, and practical needs.
In the early 1900s, British soldiers and officials in tropical areas typically wore long uniforms, which were not advantageous in the local temperatures. To adapt to the weather, the pants were shortened to end just above the knee, yet still appeared “neat” enough for formal occasions. Thus, the Bermuda shorts were born.

How to Style Bermuda Shorts Advantageously?
Due to their length and cut, styling Bermuda shorts is not so simple, as choosing the rest of the outfit unwisely can make the shorts look bulky and less flattering. To make the shorts work for your figure, opt for slim tops and blazers, as Queen Mary did. Her belt accentuates the narrowest part of the body. For footwear, it’s better to choose pumps, sandals with a small heel, and delicate shoes like loafers. Avoid chunky sneakers, which can make the legs look shorter in combination with the short Bermuda shorts. For materials, choose sturdy fabrics; Bermudas made of thin jersey fabrics are more suited for a beach vacation.
