We learned years ago from YouTube tutorials to properly finish a makeup routine with a setting spray. Back then, the common belief was that this spray ensured long-lasting makeup. However, there are differences between a fixing spray and a setting spray–even if the two products initially sound similar. We summarize the different beauty results these products achieve.
Setting Sprays Blend Makeup and Nourish the Skin
First, it’s important to note: Setting spray primarily focuses on a visual effect rather than practical use. Those who prefer a full-face makeup look, including foundation, concealer, blush, and powder, benefit from a setting spray because a lot of product can affect the skin. The layers of products, due to their different consistencies–sometimes creamy, sometimes powdery, sometimes liquid–may not blend well over time. This blending is key to achieving a less mask-like, more natural result (just because we wear a lot doesn’t mean it has to be obvious). To eliminate this “cakey” feeling and appearance, setting spray helps as the final step.
Depending on preference, you can choose between a matte or glossy finish. When the setting spray is applied over the (almost) finished look, the different layers blend together. Instead of harsh contours and powdery spots, you get radiant and smooth transitions. The nourishing effect of some setting sprays also benefits the overall appearance of the skin. Many setting sprays contain nourishing oils or even glycerin. The result: well-cared-for skin and a beautiful finish!

Difference Between Fixing and Setting Spray: Fixing Sprays Keep Makeup in Place
What most people aim to achieve with a “finish spray” is maintaining the fresh makeup look throughout the day. This is where fixing spray comes into play, as its name suggests. The mist ensures that the makeup is sealed, or fixed, and doesn’t shift. You could say it’s like hairspray for the skin–just less sticky.
Who hasn’t experienced this: After a long day with makeup on, the concealer is no longer under the eyes but has settled into various creases and lines. To prevent this, you can seal the makeup with a fixing spray. Some sprays are formulated to withstand even sweat, ensuring the makeup stays intact. They are more functional, though they lack a nourishing effect. However, they ensure the makeup stays in place–ideally all day long.
