Summer is here, and with it, a clear view of our underarms. To keep them looking beautiful and well-groomed, STYLEBOOK spoke with a dermatologist.

Why Are Underarms Darkly Discolored?

Generally speaking, dark-haired women often have different conditions than those with fair skin: “For them, the underarms are generally always a bit darker, even if they are completely shaved,” explains Dr. Alice Martin, dermatologist and co-founder of the telemedicine practice dermanostic.

“This is simply because the hairs are already a few millimeters long before they penetrate the skin’s surface. They shimmer darkly through.” So, it’s a completely natural phenomenon. For all those women who are bothered by this, the dermatologist has two tips: “A gentle peeling can help make the hairs a little easier to shave afterward.” And: If you’re looking for a permanent solution, you can’t avoid laser treatment: “If the hairs are completely removed, the underarm area usually becomes automatically lighter,” says Dr. Alice Martin. “The costs for this range between 500 and 1,000 euros.”

Bleaching Creams for Dark Underarms?

Another cause can be a skin disorder: “A pigment disorder, meaning the production of too many pigments, can also be behind dark discolorations,” the dermatologist further explains.

Many are bothered by dark underarms and want to do something about it. “Mild lightening creams, which are available for 10 to 20 euros, can help.” But caution: The doctor advises against strongly bleaching creams, “they can cause irritation in the underarm area.”

Fungal Infection–the Deodorant Could Be to Blame

Additionally, a fungal infection can also be the cause of darkly colored underarms: “Such a fungal infection quite often occurs in this area,” notes Dr. Alice Martin. This is often because the deodorant is not tolerated. Products with aggressive dyes and preservatives should therefore be avoided.

If the deodorant is indeed to blame, the solution is simple: “In this case, it can help to switch deodorants and treat the skin with a gentle peeling to restore its color,” says the dermatologist.

Home Remedies as Brighteners for Underarms?

Lemon is a well-known home remedy for discoloration, and the yellow fruit is also often used to lighten hair. But caution! Its high acid content can irritate the skin, especially after shaving.

“I advise against experimenting with lemon juice, but also with potatoes or baking soda,” Dr. Alice Martin makes clear. “Of course, everyone can try it carefully for themselves–but the effect usually doesn’t last long anyway.”
