Reality TV star Jana-Maria Herz experienced a burst breast implant. She openly discussed the incident and her next steps on Instagram.

Breast Implant Ruptured for Jana-Maria

Jana-Maria Herz had breast implants inserted about five years ago. “I just wanted them to be round, to fall nicely, and not to have to wear a bra under dresses. I also have the same bra size as before. So very small, very fine, and very unspectacular,” she reports in a new Instagram video.

For a long time, she had no problems until a recent incident: “In my last show, one of my breast implants ruptured. I was doing a show challenge, there were these heavy boxes, and I got the edge on my boob,” she further explains. A large, blue bruise formed, but Jana-Maria initially didn’t think much of it. During a routine check-up, her doctor discovered that her breast implant had ruptured. For Jana-Maria, this means she now has to undergo surgery and pay for it herself.

What to Do if a Breast Implant Ruptures?

If a breast implant ruptures, an experienced doctor should always be consulted. They can assess the risk and danger, which always depends on the type of implant. Typically, implants are made of saline solution or silicone gel. A saline solution leaks from the implant into the surrounding tissue and is absorbed by the body. Saline solutions are sterile and are usually excreted without problems. The breast visibly loses volume—a noticeable size difference is quickly apparent.

In the case of a silicone implant tear, the material either remains within the capsule or leaks into surrounding tissue. This is potentially more problematic than saline implants, as inflammatory reactions in the tissue are possible, hardening can occur, or even capsular contracture may develop.

An implant doesn’t just “burst” like a balloon; it usually tears gradually. However, as in the case of Jana-Maria Herz, an impact, accident, high pressure, or collision can also cause a breast implant to rupture. This is extremely rare.

In general, the likelihood of a breast implant rupturing depends on several factors: the type of implant, the age of the implant, the surgical method, and individual physical stress. Therefore, regular medical check-ups, especially with MRI or ultrasound, are important.
