On the occasion of the visit by France’s President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, Princess Kate chose her favorite tiara, which she likes to wear to grand, ceremonial events. She wore it about two years ago to the wedding of Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah and the architect Princess Rajwa.

Princess Kate’s favorite tiara is known as the Lover’s Knot Tiara and is worn by Kate on special occasions. The state visit by Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte was Kate’s first of its kind after her illness. A fitting reason, then, to bring out the Lover’s Knot Tiara.
To complement it, Princess Kate chose a cape dress in a rich wine red by Givenchy by Sarah Burton. Burton also designed Kate’s wedding dress in 2011, though she was then the chief designer at Alexander McQueen.

Princess Kate’s Tiara Has an Intriguing History
Princess Kate’s favorite tiara is actually a replica of the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which once belonged to Princess Augusta of Hesse. Through her marriage to her second cousin and first Duke of Cambridge, Adolphus Frederick, she became the Duchess of Cambridge. A granddaughter of Princess Augusta was Queen Mary, who in 1914 commissioned her jeweler Garrard to create a replica. He incorporated 38 pearls taken from other pieces of jewelry. The crown was also adorned with sparkling diamonds and teardrop-shaped pearls, the latter of which were removed around 1930.
No One Wore the Tiara for Two Decades
After Queen Mary’s death, Queen Elizabeth II inherited the Lover’s Knot Tiara. However, she was less fond of the heavy piece and only occasionally took it out of storage. Princess Diana, who gained access to the tiara after marrying the current King Charles III, wore it to many special occasions.
An unforgettable appearance was in 1989 in Hong Kong. Lady Di paired the Lover’s Knot Tiara with her iconic, pearl-studded “Elvis Dress.” After her separation from King Charles III, Princess Diana no longer wore the tiara. For many years, the elegant crown remained locked away in the royal vaults. Two decades later, Princess Kate rediscovered the tiara and wore it again for the first time in 2015.

One reason Princess Kate wears her favorite tiara only on very special occasions could be its weight. According to the British Mirror, royal fashion expert Miranda Holder claims the tiara is very heavy and less comfortable to wear. So heavy, in fact, that it is said to cause headaches. For special occasions, Princess Kate apparently accepts this inconvenience.
